As the lights dim on the pre-season hype and the roar of the crowd beckons for the IPL 2026 season opener, all eyes are on the Pink City. But while the headlines are buzzing about Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) new full-time captain, Riyan Parag, the skipper himself is trying to shift the spotlight away from his team’s youngest star.

In a move that signals a mature shift in RR’s leadership, Parag has made a “special request” regarding the 14-year-old batting phenom, Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The Request: “Let Him Be a Kid”

During a recent pre-season press conference in Jaipur, Parag didn’t just talk tactics; he talked protection. His request was simple yet profound: Leave Vaibhav alone.

“As a captain, my message to him would be to not do a lot of press conferences or follow a lot of media. Let him just enjoy, which I will request you (the media) as well. Do not reach out to his manager or anyone; just let him be. He’s a 14-year-old kid, let him play cricket.”Riyan Parag

Parag, who himself entered the IPL as a teenager and famously navigated years of intense social media scrutiny and “trolling,” seems determined to ensure that Suryavanshi doesn’t have to fight the same off-field battles.

Why the Hype?

It is hard to keep the media away when a player is doing what Suryavanshi has done over the past 12 months. Since his debut in 2025, the left-hander has:

  • Become the youngest centurion in IPL history (101 off 38 balls vs GT at age 14).
  • Powered India to an Under-19 World Cup title in February 2026 with a breathtaking 175 off 80 balls in the final against England.
  • Maintained a staggering IPL strike rate of over 206.

Most recently, a viral practice video showed the youngster smoking five sixes in an over against veteran teammate Ravindra Jadeja, proving that his U-19 heroics are translating perfectly back into the T20 format.

The Strategic Shield: Jaiswal to Shoulder the Load

Parag also outlined a clear tactical plan to protect his “Trump Card.” With the departure of long-time captain Sanju Samson to CSK, the batting order has seen a shake-up. Diamond Exchange Parag confirmed that Suryavanshi will likely open the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.

However, the pressure won’t be shared equally—by design. Parag noted that Jaiswal is now experienced enough to “soak up” the primary pressure of the Powerplay, giving Suryavanshi the “license to kill” from ball one without worrying about the scoreboard or the consequences.

A New Era for the Royals

With Kumar Sangakkara still at the helm as Head Coach and Parag taking over the captaincy, the Royals are leaning into a philosophy of “enjoyment over results.” In a league known for its cut-throat pressure, Parag’s plea for Suryavanshi is a refreshing reminder that at the heart of the multi-billion dollar spectacle, there is still a young boy playing the game he loves.

As RR prepares to take on Chennai Super Kings in their opening match on March 30th in Guwahati, the message from the camp is clear: Watch the talent, but respect the person.
