It’s miraculous what they’ve done in quite a short space of time. I was really keen that they should be playing their own instruments. After we played together as a band for the first time, I finally understood the appeal of a garage band to teenagers. Working with the UK’s most prolific female writer alongside some of the country’s most-loved female actors was inspiring, to say the least. The shoot was challenging and demanding, of course, but I learnt so much for all these people and am so proud of what we made together.

Sally Wainwright’s latest drama premieres on BBC One at 9pm tonight, showcasing the intertwining lives of five overworked women who ditch quiet decorum to form a punk rock band and enter their local Hebden Bridge talent contest. At the centre of Riot Women are Beth (Joanna Scanlan) and Kitty (Rosalie Craig), two unlikely allies and the unlikely creative masterminds of their band. Kitty is fiery, brash and unpredictable – but they turn out to be more entangled than Beth would ever have previously believed. Written by Happy Valley writer Sally Wainwright, the show will air its first episode on Sunday, with six episodes set to air over the next few weeks. The BBC have described the show as featuring five women who form a punk rock band. Filmed in Hebden Bridge right here in Yorkshire, the cast is made up of Lorraine Ashbourne, Joanna Scanlan, Tamsin Greig, Rosalie Craig, and Amelia Bullmore.
The BBC and BritBox International have announced the cast of Riot Women, the brand-new drama series from the multi-BAFTA award winning writer Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax, Gentleman Jack). Made by Drama Republic (One Day, Doctor Foster, The English), for the BBC, the series is a co-commission with BritBox International with worldwide distribution being handled by Mediawan Rights. While the five central characters in Riot Women feel “invisible”, the cast are anything but… The leading actors – Joanna Scanlan, Rosalie Craig, Lorraine Ashbourne, Tamsin Greig, and Amelia Bullmore – at the top of their game. Sally Wainwright is a favourite here at TVGuide.co.uk, so watching her latest six-part series was a no-brainer.
we love tv
Given the show is about the formation of a punk band, obviously music plays a big part. We all play our instruments and sing, and this required a lot of preparation and rehearsal. Thankfully Kitty plays the guitar and sings, both of which I’m pretty familiar with.
- It’s a classy slice of American drama with a coup de theatre at the end of show that stops it in its tracks.
- I’ve had the good fortune of working with my husband, Hadley Fraser, a few times.
- It has a great team behind it, an awesome cast and it’s complex and thought-provoking.
- Peter Davison (Doctor Who) and Claire Skinner (Outnumbered) and Angel Coulby (Merlin) also join the cast.
- The music produced by the band within the show was all written by a band called ARXX, read more below.
- And like Happy Valley, the Yorkshire writer gives a voice to “women of a certain age”.
Rosalie Craig joins cast of Good Night, Oscar with Sean Hayes
You find the common ground between you, where you identify with her and things tend to take shape from there. Sally had a very specific idea of what she wanted for Kitty, so there were many conversations to be had around the specifics of playing her. Kitty is resilient and attacks life despite a challenging start. She’s a survivor – she’s literally covered in scars – but doesn’t consider herself a victim. As you might expect for Sally’s writing, Kitty’s life is a rollercoaster but the inspiring thing about her is that she’ll always get back up after being knocked down (or out) in her own unique way.
Considering the dramatic revelations in the season finale, the Olivier nominee also has ideas for what future episodes could explore. Speaking to Radio Times this week, cast member Rosalie Craig – who plays Kitty in the show – said that the last episode “definitely doesn’t feel final”. Worldtradex forex brokers reviews The Riot Women original music soundtrack is currently available to buy now, by Ben Foster, Riot Women and Rosalie Craig. All six episodes of Riot Women are streaming now on BBC iPlayer. I’ve got a project that films towards the end of the year (but sadly I can’t say what as it hasn’t been announced yet!) as well as lots of other projects in development.
The six-part series is a testament to the power of friendship, music, and the resilience of women who refuse to be silenced by age or expectation. But I also had great fun onstage at the Barbican in a play called Goodnight Oscar playing opposite Will & Grace‘s Sean Hayes. It’s a classy slice of American drama with a coup de theatre at the end of show that stops it in its tracks. Riot Women is a hard-hitting, beautifully crafted, emotionally engaging and dramatically rich drama written by national treasure Sally Wainwright. It focuses on five women who put together a punk band to win a local talent contest. They juggle demanding jobs, grown-up children, aging parents, absent husbands and the menopause as the band becomes a catalyst for change in their lives.
Who wrote the music in Riot Women? Who are ARXX?
Peter Davison (Doctor Who) and Claire Skinner (Outnumbered) and Angel Coulby (Merlin) also join the cast. In the series, Kitty and Beth create the music and lyrics with input from the other members of the band. Hanni (they/them, guitar and vocals) and Clara (she/her, drums and percussion) are best friends who are rising stars on the live scene. The Riot Women soundtrack features original songs from Brighton punk duo ARXX. With all six episodes available to stream now on BBC iPlayer, we sat down with Rosalie (who is also hot off her role in ITV’s The Hack) to find out more.
And like Happy Valley, the Yorkshire writer gives a voice to “women of a certain age”. When I’m preparing to play a real person I do a lot of research and find out as much about them as possible. I’ll watch as much footage as I can to observe accent, mannerisms and energy. It’s important to remember that you’re also in a piece of fiction – it shouldn’t be an impersonation as such – rather a reflection of that person. Well, the bad news is, there’s no word just yet, and because the show is still airing weekly on BBC One (for those who prefer their drama staggered out, rather than all at once), there could be a bit of a wait before there’s any official announcement.
They were described by Diva Magazine as “a vital addition to the queer music scene”. The music produced by the band within the show was all written by a band called ARXX, read more below. Patti Lupone taught me to value myself, Joanna Scanlan and Tamsin Greig were endlessly inspiring and Sean Hayes sets a hell of an example onstage and off. I’ve had the good fortune of working with my husband, Hadley Fraser, a few times. Kitty is quite a distance from me as a person – but that’s the thrill of being an actor.
The cast of Riot Women formed ‘a legitimate music band’
“Moreover, at its heart it is a story and production that has women at its very centre – it touches on themes and aspects of womanhood that seldom have https://worldtradex.bid/ a light shone on them in prime-time drama. There’s a thrill too in being asked to play a character outside of my usual casting.” For the role of Jess Burchill, actress Lorraine Ashbourne learnt how to play the drums on the Riot Music soundtrack. She described the experience as “rewarding” and “incredibly bonding”.
I won’t give too much away, but as the name suggests it focuses on the News of the World phone-hacking scandal. It has a great team behind it, an awesome cast and it’s complex and thought-provoking. It’s a very exciting time full of anticipation for some super projects to be seen. I have also just finished Goodnight Oscar at The Barbican and loved every minute of it.
