Hardware as a Service is moving from a niche procurement model to a mainstream one across India’s industrial sectors. The combination of rapid technology evolution, high capital costs, and increasing access to reliable service providers is making Hardware as a Service for Industries a preferable subscription model over outright hardware purchase in a growing number of use cases.

  1. Agriculture and precision farming: drone-based crop monitoring and precision application equipment is among the highest-growth HaaS categories in India. The seasonal nature of agricultural operations makes hardware ownership economically unattractive. Farmers who need drone equipment for 60 to 90 days per year derive better value from a subscription that provides maintained equipment during the season than from year-round ownership with associated storage and servicing costs.
  2. Infrastructure inspection: power line, pipeline, and bridge inspection operations use drones and specialized imaging equipment that requires regular calibration and firmware updates to maintain regulatory compliance. HaaS models in this sector provide always-current inspection hardware with built-in certification management, reducing the administrative burden on inspection companies.
  3. Defense and security: paramilitary and private security organizations use surveillance drones and perimeter monitoring hardware in operational cycles that do not require permanent ownership of all equipment. HaaS arrangements for this sector provide scalable hardware access that can be ramped up for specific operations and reduced during lower-tempo periods.
  4. Manufacturing quality control: inline inspection systems using computer vision hardware are being provided under HaaS models in Indian manufacturing, particularly in auto components, pharmaceutical packaging, and electronics assembly. According to PwC India Manufacturing Technology Report, 35 percent of Indian mid-size manufacturers surveyed in 2023 expressed preference for subscription-based quality control technology over capital purchase, citing technology obsolescence as the primary concern with ownership.
  5. Healthcare and diagnostics: portable diagnostic hardware including ultrasound devices, digital X-ray units, and point-of-care testing equipment is increasingly available through HaaS models for smaller hospitals and diagnostic centers that cannot justify the capital cost of ownership. This model is expanding healthcare technology access in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Indian markets.
  6. Logistics and warehousing: barcode scanners, mobile computing terminals, automated sorting hardware, and warehouse robotics are all available through HaaS arrangements from multiple Indian providers. Warehouse operators who use HaaS for operational hardware report faster technology refresh cycles and lower total cost compared to capital purchase models.
